Omani Craft Works was established in 2006,
it currently has 26 workers , working 8
hours daily excluding Saturdays and Public
Holidays. From 9.30a.m-5.30p.m.The workers
are illiterate but skillful in their own
fields such as Screen Printing and Dyeing.
The company deals with goods made from Lokta
Paper which is all hand-made. The range
includes, gift boxes, jewellery boxes, calendars,
postcards and much more. Their material
is collected from Chapa, (Eastern part of
Nepal, in the countryside) and the dyes
are imported from India. Until now, the
company did not directly export to other
countries they only supplied to other companies
which exported the goods out of Nepal.
The staff at Omani Craft Works believe in
teamwork, everyone helps each other as and
when needed. There is a strong bond between
the staff, they treat each other like members
of their own family. The employees are committed
to doing their best and producing high quality
products. The Omani Craft family does not
believe in child labour and the employer
upholds the worker’s rights. Employees
are paid for the over-time they put in.
They treat their workers with respect and
dignity.
BAGAWATI
RAJULI Bagawati
was introduced to this job by her friend
and she has been working at Omani Craft
Works for 2 years. She works in the Screen
Printing Section. She paints throughout
the 8 hours of work with a 30 minutes break
in between. Usually the employees have Saturday
as a day off but sometimes if there is a
lot of work to be done, she together with
the other workers do over time on Saturday.
Bagawati learnt painting skills from her
friend and through experience.
Bagawati is a quiet and hardworking worker,
who does her work diligently and sincerely.
She is happy with the job as it is difficult
for an illiterate person to find a better
paying job in our competitive world today
and she enjoys working at Omani.
BINA
RAI Bina
works in the Screen Printing Section and
has been working at Omani Craft Works for
about 1 year. Bina was introduced to this
job by her friends and she is happy working
at Omani as she really likes working with
her friends. She earns a basic salary of
2000NR per month and lives nearby so she
doesn’t have a problem with transportation.
In a day she has to paint around 600-700
papers together with other workers working
in the same section, she learnt painting
skills through experience.
Bina is very sociable, she likes interacting
with the other workers which makes it fun
for her to be a at work. Bina would like
to have a more financially stable job and
if there is an opportunity for another better
paying and accommodating job, she would
take it.
Mysmallshop would like to be able to increase
the wage for Bina and her colleagues if
we can get enough orders for the hand made
paper products.
MAYA
RAI Maya
is married with 3 children , her husband
is working overseas in Malaysia so he often
sends money over and she earns around 5000NR
per month. Together with her pay and the
money that her husband sends her, she says
it is enough to support her family and for
their living expenses. Maya was introduced
to this job by her friends and has been
working at Omani ever since the company
started so she is one of the oldest employees
in the company. She didn’t know any
skills when she started off but with each
task she was given, she managed to learn
from experience. She says that there isn’t
any specific work to do, whatever the orders
come, she must do it together with the other
workers as a team to finish the work, like
glueing, painting or cutting of papers.
When asked if she would move to another
company is she was given an offer with better
pay and accommodation, her reply was simply
“NO” as she is happy working
at Omani Crafts as she likes the working
terms here.
